Fruitcake Toss Day

Fruitcake Toss Day

Fruitcake Toss Day

Similar to other January holidays, one translation of Fruitcake Toss Day is symbolic of beginning a new year and tossing out the old one. In league with New Year’s resolutions, tossing out the fruitcake simply means to let go of all unneeded material items — and let’s be honest — people in your life.

On a more playful note, if you did receive a fruitcake for the Christmas holidays and you still haven’t consumed it, it’s time to toss it out! Call your fruitcake-hating friends, and meet up to toss your old fruitcakes together. This fruitcake-tossing tradition is thought to have started in Manitou Springs, Colorado. Each year Manitou Springs hosts a Fruitcake Toss event where citizens gather with their heavy fruit-laden breads and launch them, any number of ways, into the sky.

Start your own tradition. Choose an item — yes, it could be fruitcake — and on January 3, invite some friends to join you in tossing out the old to make room for the new!
